University Launches Dual Degree BxMx Programme
Ahmedabad University has introduced a dual degree
BxMx programme, allowing undergraduate students to pursue a bachelor’s degree
in one discipline while completing a master’s degree in another within five
years. This innovative programme, launched on Thursday, is designed to provide
Arts and Science students with a professional degree, starting from this
academic year.
Pankaj
Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and professor at Ahmedabad University, remarked,
“Ahmedabad University strongly believes in helping students discover their
passion and find employment opportunities within their chosen fields. The BxMx programme enhances our students'
abilities and better prepares them for emerging career opportunities that lie
at the intersections of multiple disciplines.
The new BxMx
programme aligns with the National
Education Policy (NEP 2020), advocating creative combinations of different
degrees to enhance critical and analytical thinking and improve employability.
It offers multiple entry and exit points, eliminating rigid boundaries and
providing opportunities for research-based specialisations and
multidisciplinary work. For instance, a Humanities and Social Sciences student
aspiring to become a banker can pursue an MBA
alongside their BA degree. Similarly, a student completing a BS in Mathematical
and Computational Sciences or Physics can pursue a Master’s in Quantitative
Finance through the BxMx Programme.
Chandra added, “The ability to pursue a bachelor’s
degree in one discipline while simultaneously advancing towards a master’s
degree in another sets this programme apart from traditional integrated
programmes, which follow a single, linear path”
Students can enrol in the BxMx programme upon joining the university or apply after
enrollment. The eligibility criteria, admission requirements, and courses that
must be completed within the first four years will be specified. Students have
the option to exit the programme after four years, receiving their respective
undergraduate degrees. The programme also allows multiple entry points at the
end of semesters four, five, and six, provided the credit and cumulative grade
point average (CGPA) requirements are met.
As Ahmedabad
University develops additional master’s programmes, undergraduate students
will have access to various options for completing master’s degrees in
different disciplines following their undergraduate education.
