Changes
in Immigration Policies Impacting Study Abroad
Learn about new immigration policies, study
trends, and popular destinations for Indian students pursuing higher education
in 2024.
The Education Minister of India stated in
2024 that approximately more than 1,335,000 students of India were studying in
foreign countries for higher education, with a slight increase as compared to
the previous year, 2023, which was 1.318 lakh.
While this figure has been higher in certain
years, it is still considerably higher than it was before the Covid-19
pandemic. The major countries of origin include Canada (42,700 students), the
USA (33,700), the United Kingdom (18,500), and Australia (12,200).
Shift
of Key Policies Across Various Countries
New
Zealand
Students moving from a postgraduate diploma
to a master’s degree are now allowed a post-study work visa, improving
flexibility for international students.
Germany
Germany has proposed to grant 90,000 permits
of residence to qualified workers from India annually as contrasted to 20,000
earlier. India ranks high in Germany, as there are 49,000 students and 6,700
researchers from this country.
UK
As of last year, in the UK there were 23
percent fewer Indian students as more stringent norms were clamped down on
family visas. But the post-work, for 2 years after the completion of the
course, on the Graduate Route visa is intact. There are several issues, such as
tuition fees and the problems of financial authoritarianism for universities to
consider.
Australia
Australia envisages limiting the enrollment
of international students to 270,000 by 2025. New visa cost savings up to
A$29,710, in addition to a higher English language proficiency criterion. This
new MATES visa stream will enable the best graduates of India to work in
Australia for up to two years.
Philippines
and Italy
Recently the Philippines has opened up the
doors for foreign nationals, including Indians, to practice as doctors in the
country. Italians have recently agreed to engage in fingerprint appointments
for long-term visas after January 2025.
New Preferences Emerging
Currently, New Zealand and Ireland are among
the preferred study abroad destinations for Indian students, with significant
enrollment increases in both countries. These changes signal changes in global
immigration policies that will define the future of international education.
