First Underwater Welding and Deep Diving Certification Program

IIT Guwahati and IRS launch India’s first underwater welding and deep diving certification program to advance offshore asset maintenance skills.

India can boast of a new achievement in enhancing its capacity in underwater asset management after the recent culmination of the country’s first-ever training and certification program in underwater welding and deep diving. This historic partnership of the Technology Innovation Hub (TiH) at IIT Guwahati with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is poised to enhance the maritime and energy industry with a competent workforce.

A Revolutionary Partnership

The newly launched program, held at Neel Diving Academy in Kochi, involved lectures and practical sessions to familiarize the candidates with the actual exercises of underwater welding.

The trainers from IRS and TiH IIT Guwahati were involved in the training sessions, and they provided an all-around program with many sessions, including deep sea diving and welding techniques.

Developing the necessary expertise for key sectors

This is a unique program that fulfills the need for skilled human resources in the maritime and energy sectors in India. Prof.

IIT Guwahati Director Devendra Jalihal says the initiative is important in pointing out the program's uniqueness. “This first-of-its-kind program is an interdisciplinary blend of academic knowledge with industrial experience to fix the skills deficiency, particularly in the marine and energy markets,” the director said.

Completing the training session is quite in line with the focus of the Indian government towards creating a self-reliant India where local talent is encouraged to work in specialized domains such as underwater welding.

Policies to Foster Innovation and Organizational Capability

The Chair of Technology Innovation and Development Foundation, IIT Guwahati, Prof. N R Mandal, noted the significance of this achievement by adding, "The successful completion of this program reflects our consistency to develop superior specialized maritime skills and fortify India’s underwater durables upkeep potential.”

Through this initiative, India is not only coming up with underwater welding and deep diving requirements but also producing competent personnel to man the required offshore and marine structures.
