IIT-Jodhpur to Introduce BTech Programme in Hindi
IIT-Jodhpur
is set to launch a BTech programme taught in Hindi alongside English, starting
from the upcoming academic session. The admission process remains unchanged,
but first-year students will choose their preferred language of instruction at
the start of the academic year.
More than three years
after IITs initially expressed
concerns about the Centre's decision to offer engineering education in regional
languages, IIT-Jodhpur has decided
to implement this change. The new batch of undergraduate students, beginning
this month, will have the option to be taught in Hindi or English.
In an interview with
The Indian Express, institute director Avinash Kumar Agarwal stated that this
option will be available for all programmes. The admission process will not
differ, but first-year students will indicate their preference for English or
Hindi at the beginning of the academic year.
Based on their
preference, the batch will be divided into two sections: Hindi medium and
English medium. Both sections will be taught by the same professor to ensure
consistency and rigor in education. Students will also have the flexibility to
switch between sections if needed.
Agarwal explained,
"For a Physics course, if some students prefer English and others Hindi,
we will split the batch accordingly. The same professor will teach both
sections to maintain consistency. Technical terms will be in English, but
explanations will be in a mix of Hindi and English, not pure Hindi. Our goal is
to eliminate understanding barriers."
First-year students
will have access to study materials and assignments in both languages. The
decision to offer instruction in Hindi and English was made about one and a
half months ago and was approved by the institute's Senate on June 26 and the
Board of Governors on June 28.
To support students, IIT-Jodhpur will provide remedial
English classes to enhance listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. "These
classes aim to ensure students are comfortable with English by the end of the
first year, allowing them to shift to English medium if they wish," said
Agarwal.
This decision aligns
with the National Education Policy 2020, which advocates for education in
Indian languages for better comprehension and teaching outcomes. Initially, IITs had resisted this proposal due to
concerns about employment opportunities, industry requirements, and logistical
challenges.
When asked about the
impact on job prospects for students taught in Hindi, Agarwal responded,
"Learning in their mother tongue enhances students' understanding and
innovation abilities. Their concepts will be clearer. With English classes,
their communication skills will improve, allowing them to shift to English in
later years. By graduation, they will be as competent as their peers from
English batches."
Agarwal added,
"Students from non-English mediums have the same IQ levels as those from
English mediums but might miss opportunities due to accessibility issues. We
aim to bridge this gap by offering first-year BTech programmes in Hindi."
Currently, this option
is available only to the new batch of students starting this year. The
institute has yet to decide whether to extend the programme to second-year
students, pending feedback from the initial implementation.
