Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized
the institute’s commitment to merging sports and technology, stating, “With the
ever-increasing intervention of technology in sports, the Institute is
committed to bringing sports and technology together. We believe the sports
technology market will be substantial, necessitating the development of
indigenous products for Indian athletes, from health monitoring to progress in
their respective sports.”
New
Four-Year Course on Sports Science
Starting in the 2025 academic session, IIT Madras will introduce a four-year course
on sports science. This course, part of IIT
Madras’ Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA), aims
to boost deep tech startups in the sports sector. Professor Mahesh Panchagula,
head of CESSA, mentioned they are still working on the course’s modalities,
including eligibility and structure. “We already started four- to eight-week
courses on the different topics such as sports psychology, exercise physiology,
strength conditioning, and food nutrition. These courses are open to anyone. Students
will be able to learn from the best people,” said Professor Panchagula.
Additionally, the institute will introduce sports
management courses. IIT Madras’
Centre has made significant advancements in sports like Boxing, Judo,
Wrestling, Game and Training analysis, and sensor boards for both Tennis and
Badminton. ESPN is already utilizing IIT
Madras’ smart tech to enhance game viewing and fan engagement.
IIT
Madras also aims to support Indian government initiatives
and various sports bodies' efforts towards hosting the Olympics in 2036.
Experts are focusing on ensuring Indian athletes win at least 50 medals in the
