NEET UG 2024: Supreme Court Denies Stay Order on Counselling; Re-test Results Expected by June 30

The Supreme Court of India has declined to issue a stay on the NEET UG 2024 counselling, which is tentatively scheduled for the first week of July. Additionally, the court refused to order an immediate CBI investigation into the discrepancies surrounding the NEET UG 2024 exam.

On June 14, 2024, a vacation bench led by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding a plea for a CBI probe into the NEET UG 2024 paper leak scandal. The Supreme Court also issued a notice regarding the NTA's plea to transfer the petition from the high court to the apex court, with a hearing set for July 8, 2024.

Expressing concerns about the examination's transparency, the Supreme Court stated, "If there is 0.001% negligence on the part of anyone, it should be thoroughly addressed." The bench emphasized that the hard work of students should not be disregarded.

Several petitions had been filed earlier addressing issues such as the NEET UG 2024 paper leak, delayed question paper distribution, unfair grace marks, counselling delays, and a significant increase in top scores. On June 13, 2024, the Supreme Court ordered the cancellation of the NEET UG 2024 scorecards of 1563 students who received unfair grace marks. These students were given the option to either retake the exam on June 23, 2024, or retain their original scorecards without the grace marks.

According to the NTA, the results of the NEET UG 2024 re-exam will be announced by June 30, 2024, and the counselling process will begin on July 6, 2024. Following the Supreme Court's decision for a re-exam for the 1563 students, the newly appointed Education Minister of India, Dharmendra Pradhan, denied any malpractice during the NEET UG 2024 exam.
