Scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have developed edible straws with millet, suggesting an alternative to plastic and paper. Spearheaded by research scholar Tejaswini Dhanaji Patil under the guidance of Prof. Kirtiraj K. Gaikwad, this innovation addresses two pressing issues: minimizing the use of plastics and encouraging green consumption.
Bio-degradable and nutritional innovation
The straws are manufactured from barnyard millets and are completely biodegradable, organic, and non-toxic when eaten. They echo with campaigns such as “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan“ and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat, “ where the government is focused on minimizing single-use plastics.
The project also recognizes the UN’s “International Year of Millets 2023,” focusing on millets as a nutritious and sustainable food grain.
Staying Power And Sustainability
These straws do not degrade in liquids and simultaneously provide the nutritional values of barnyard millets. Prof. Chemical-free composition and biodegradability were underlined by Gaikwad, which can decompose independently, thus leaving minimal impact on the environment.
According to the researcher Tejaswini Patil, “The idea that we had in mind was to develop a product which was not only functional and sustainable but should also be nutritional and could redefine the basic objects of life for a better planet.”
Progressing Global Sustainability Objectives
Dr. Kamal Kishore Pant, the Director of IIT Roorkee, supported the initiative and added that the innovation will help address global problems through the usage of science and indigenous knowledge of Indian scientists. The millet-based straws present a positive shift towards living an eco-friendly life and reducing the use of plastics.”
