This initiative, in collaboration with the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) and the Piramal family, honors Dr. Gita Piramal, a prominent business historian and advocate for academic excellence. As a Senior Associate Fellow at Somerville, Dr. Piramal has significantly influenced corporate education, with her works forming the backbone of MBA curricula worldwide.
The Dr. Gita Piramal Scholarship aims to uplift India’s brightest minds by providing essential financial support for a five-year period. This program will enhance India’s intellectual landscape and contribute to sustainable growth across the country.
Reflecting on this initiative, Dr. Piramal remarked, “India is my family home, and Somerville has been my intellectual home for many years. This scholarship will enable bright young minds from India to thrive in Oxford’s rich academic environment, furthering India’s development.”
Jan Royall, Principal of Somerville College, expressed pride in honoring Dr. Piramal, stating, “It is a privilege to commemorate a longstanding friend of the College. Dr. Piramal’s legacy will empower brilliant Indian students, providing them with a world-class education at Oxford, which they can use to give back to India meaningfully.”
Since its founding in 2013, the OICSD has supported over 60 Indian students at Oxford, many of whom have returned to India to address critical issues in healthcare, technology, and climate change. The introduction of the Dr. Gita Piramal Scholarship reinforces this commitment, ensuring that deserving Indian students from underprivileged backgrounds can access top-tier education and contribute to both global and national challenges.
